Taking Calcium with Vitamin D: Is it SAFE or Not?

Short Answer: It is generally safe to take calcium and vitamin D together or one after another.

Calcium and vitamin D are both healthy supplements.

Calcium contains calcium carbonate, which is essential for bone health and muscle contraction.

Vitamin D contains vitamin D3, which is important for calcium absorption and immune function.

According to Ayurveda, calcium and vitamin D can be taken together, but only in moderation and with proper timing.

Ayurveda believes that calcium and vitamin D have different qualities and effects on the body, and that taking too much of either can cause imbalances in the doshas (the three energies that govern the body).

Ayurveda also recommends taking calcium and vitamin D in the morning or afternoon, but not at night, as they can interfere with sleep quality.

But according to science, calcium and vitamin D can be safely taken together or one after another, as they work synergistically to support bone health and prevent osteoporosis.

Science also suggests that calcium and vitamin D may have other benefits beyond bone health, such as reducing the risk of certain cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cognitive decline.

However, evidence about these health benefits is not conclusive, and more studies are needed to confirm them.

As a nutritionist, my advice is to try first.

If after taking calcium and vitamin D together you experience any side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, irregular heartbeat, or kidney stones, then stop combining them. And if you can tolerate them, then continue.

However, you should be mindful of the quality and quantity of calcium and vitamin D you consume.

Because taking too much of either can cause toxicity and adverse effects on your health.

You should also consult your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you have any medical conditions or take any medications that may interact with them.

Whether you take them together or not, you should always choose high-quality calcium and vitamin D supplements that are tested for purity and potency.

Because some supplements may contain contaminants or inaccurate amounts of the nutrients.

You should also look for supplements that contain calcium citrate, which is more easily absorbed than calcium carbonate, and vitamin D3, which is more effective than vitamin D2.

You can store your calcium and vitamin D supplements in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Do not store them in the bathroom or near heat sources, as they may lose their effectiveness over time.

You should also check the expiration date on the label and discard any expired supplements.

Finally, remember that calcium and vitamin D are not substitutes for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

You should also get enough calcium and vitamin D from natural food sources, such as dairy products, green leafy vegetables, fatty fish, eggs, and fortified foods. You should also get enough sun exposure to help your body produce its own vitamin D. And you should also exercise regularly to strengthen your bones and muscles.
